Bridge of Chittoore in Rajpootana

1878 - Painting

Bridge of Chittoore in Rajpootana is a painting created in 1878 by Marianne North.  It is housed in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The painting depicts a landscape scene in Rajpootana (now Rajasthan, India).

The artwork shows a dusty road leading towards a bridge spanning a body of water. The road is flanked by lush vegetation, including large, spreading trees that cast shadows, and smaller trees and shrubs.

Several figures are depicted, some on camels and others on foot or horseback, traveling along the road. Near the left side of the painting, there is a small, domed structure, possibly a shrine or temple, nestled under the shade of a large tree. People are gathered near this structure. The overall style suggests a depiction of everyday life in the region. The size of the artwork is not provided in the metadata.
