The Deposition of Christ is an oil painting on canvas (430x220 cm) by Sante Cattaneo, dating back to 1808 and preserved on the altar of the Blessed Sacrament in the church of Saints Faustino and Giovita in Brescia.
The canvas is placed, for artistic quality, among the best of the painter, now at full maturity and therefore easily victim of pure stylistic repetitions, which instead proves to be able to avoid by proposing new compositional models. The painting by Cattaneo comes to replace the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Romanino, which has always been the main altarpiece but requisitioned in 1797. Romanino's table, among other things, is now lost.
