Christ Carrying the Cross is a painting by the painter Nicolas Tournier dated around 1632.
The work was first exhibited in the church of Saint-Jérôme in Toulouse (former chapel of the Blue Penitents). During the French Revolution, the painting was confiscated and entrusted to the Augustinian Museum along with other works such as Christ Descended from the Cross which illustrate episodes of the Passion of Christ (here Christ under the Cross, helped by Simon of Cyrene, station five of the Way of the Cross).
The painting was stolen in 1818 and did not reappear until 2009 at a sale in Florence organized by Sotheby's. During a sale held in Paris in November 2011, the French state banned the exit board.
