
Annunciation is an oil painting on wood painted by Frei Carlos around 1523 and which is currently in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon.
The painting represents the biblical episode of the Annunciation.The painting is guided by luminosity, the relationship between interior and exterior space and the harmonious play of the power lines of the composition defined through architecture. Friar Carlos painted this work a few years after professing in the jerónimo convent of Espinheiro, in it revealing already the soft elegance and clear scenographic ordination that characterize the retabular paintings of the monk-painter. The marked lightof the colorful and the grace of the figure of the Virgin and the juvenile Angel are characteristic of the pious and calm universe of Brother Charles' painting.
