The Death of the Imperial Prince (French: La mort du Prince impérial) is an oil painting by the French painter Paul Jamin in 1882 and in the collection of the Museum of the Second Empire in Compiègne.
Napoleon Eugene Bonaparte (son of the French Emperor Napoleon III) in 1879 obtained permission to join the British army as an observer and went to South Africa, where the British were at war with the Zulu tribe. On 1 June, he went with a small detachment of Englishmen to scout the iTyotosi River, where they were attacked by the Zulus. The terrified British fled, leaving the 23-year-old prince alone in the face of about 40 Zulus, 10 of whom, armed with Nguni spears and shields, attacked Napoleon Eugene.
