My Mother

My mother is a painting by Helene Schjerfbeck from 1909. He painted the work at the age of 47. The painting is conceived during the period when the artist moved with his mother to live in Hyvinkää. A biography about the artist has highlighted her mother's overbearing attitude towards her daughter, but artistically the period was Helene Schjerbeck's most golden time. Her mother's mental harshness is shown in the painting, however, as gloom. This died out in 1926.The board was sold in 2001 at a Bukowski auction for €874,000. It is the seventh most expensive Finnish painting, and all six of the more expensive works of art are also works by Helene Schjerfbeck.
