“Japanese lantern” (also known as “Ved Christianiafjorden”) from 1886 is a famous image created by artist Oda Lasson Krohg (1860—1935).
The picture was painted at Lasson-Famlien's place Rammebråten by Hvitsten with one of the artist's younger sisters as a model. The picture is, according to art historian Oscar Thue, “perhaps the first completed neo-romantic image in Norwegian art.” The Japanese lantern is a tangible expression of Krohg's intense preoccupation with Japonism. The image belongs to the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design. It is performed in pastel on paper, adhered on canvas and measures 99 x 66 cm. The picture was given as a gift to the National Gallery by Olaf Schou in 1909.
