Altarpiece of Saint Stephen

Altarpiece of Saint Stephen

1490 - 1500 - Reredos - 1.457m x 2.22m

The Altarpiece of San Esteban Protomártir is an old Gothic altarpiece that was installed in the main altar of the parish church of San Esteban in the city of Granollers. It is considered the work of the workshop of the Vergós with some complementary tables by Juan Gascó, possibly subcontracted by Vergós, and is dated from 1495-1500. The altarpiece was dismantled in 1775 and replaced by a new one from the Basilica of La Merced in Barcelona. From that moment, the dismantled altarpiece was kept in the parish house of Granollers until the early twentieth century, when it passed to the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, where fourteen of its panels are exhibited. The narrative theme of the main body is centered on the hagiography of the saint with scenes from his life and some related to post-death narratives related to his miracles. The iconography of the predella tables is dedicated to the cycle of the Passion of Jesus. The style of the altarpiece shows a continuity of the school of Jaume Huguet, of whom the Vergós were disciples and collaborators. In fact, some historians have defended the intervention of Huguet himself in some tables.
