Claude Renoir as a Clown

Claude Renoir as a Clown

1909 - Painting - 77cm x 1.2m

Claude Renoir en clown is a painting by Auguste Renoir made in 1909 during his Cagnoise period. It is kept at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.

It is a portrait of the painter's youngest son, Claude, dressed in a red puffy suit. Renoir emphasizes the puffy shapes of the costume, which gives a presence and a certain authority to the young boy. The columns are painted obliquely.

The clown was very present in Renoir's paintings.

During the installation, Claude had refused to wear wool stockings: it was necessary to buy silk stockings.

Claude Renoir is the third and last son of Auguste Renoir, the brother of actor Pierre Renoir and director Jean Renoir
