The Death of Socrates

The Death of Socrates

1786 - Drawing

Hi everyone, my name is Isabella! Today, we're going to look at a very special drawing called "The Death of Socrates." It's right over here, so come on, follow me! nn Have you ever heard of a philosopher? Philosophers are really smart people who love to think about big questions, like what is right and wrong, or what happens after we die. Socrates was one of the most famous philosophers ever! nn This drawing shows us the very last moments of Socrates' life. See the man in the middle, sitting on the bed? That's Socrates. He's about to drink from a cup, but it's not filled with juice or water. It has something poisonous in it! Can you believe that? nn Look at all the people around Socrates. Some of them are sad, some are angry, and some look confused. How do you think you would feel if you were there? nn Even though Socrates knew he was going to die, he still talked to his friends and students. He wanted to teach them one last lesson about courage and standing up for what you believe in. nn This drawing reminds us that even though life can be hard, it's important to always be true to ourselves. What do you think about that?
