Portrait of a Negress

Portrait of a Negress, later renamed Portrait of a Black Woman or Portrait of Madeleine, is a painting by the French painter Marie-Guillemine Benoist in 1800.

This oil on canvas is a portrait of a young black woman, the Guadeloupean Madeleine, considered a celebration of the abolition of slavery in the colonies by the French Revolution.

Acquired in 1818, this work is kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum.
