Cymon and Iphigenia

Cymon and Iphigenia

1766 - Painting - 82.6cm x 61.3cm

The artwork titled Cymon and Iphigenia is a painting created in 1766. It is currently held at the Yale Center for British Art. The painting measures 0.826 meters in width and 0.613 meters in height.

The artwork depicts a scene with a group of figures in a wooded landscape. On the right, a muscular, barefoot man wearing a robe draped over one shoulder stands with a wooden staff. He gazes towards a group of three women and a cherubic child sleeping peacefully on the ground beneath the trees. One woman lies on her back, her head resting on a bundle of fabric. Another woman sleeps with her head in the first woman's lap, and the third woman rests her head on the first woman's arm. Their postures and relaxed expressions suggest deep slumber. Another child peeks out from behind a tree trunk on the left side of the painting, observing the scene with a finger pressed to his lips. The background hints at a serene landscape with a distant building, possibly a castle, beneath a pale sky.
