The Annunciation is a painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, created between 1600 and 1700. It is housed in the Hermitage Museum. The painting measures 1.075 meters in width and 1.42 meters in height.
The artwork depicts the Annunciation scene. The Virgin Mary, dressed in a red and blue robe, is seated, her hands clasped to her chest in a gesture of humility and wonder. Before her, a kneeling angel, with large wings, extends a hand towards her. Above them, a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, descends from a cloud filled with cherubic figures. These cherubs, numerous and lively, are depicted in various poses, adding to the celestial atmosphere. The scene is set in a simple interior, with a low table or altar to the right, upon which a book rests. A basket containing what appears to be swaddling clothes is at the foot of Mary. The overall style is Baroque, characterized by dramatic lighting, dynamic composition, and emotional intensity.
