Christ Leaving the Court

Christ Leaving the Court

1860 - 1870 - Painting - 9m x 6m

Christ Leaving the Courtroom, also called The Praetorium is a monumental painting by Gustave Doré, painted between 1867 and 1872, the largest of his religious paintings and the one he considered the "work of his life". The painting was also a great success, since it was reproduced in engraving as early as 1877. Doré himself made several replicas. There are currently two other versions: one, much smaller, is exhibited in the gallery of paintings of Bob Jones University in Greenville, the other, almost as large, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes.

Acquired in 1988 by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, the painter's hometown, the original painting required a long restoration, carried out in public from 1998 to 2003, in the huge "Gustave Doré" room of the museum, where it is exhibited.
