Fantasy View of the Campo Vaccino with a Donkey

1620 - Painting - 54cm x 40cm

Fantasy View of the Campo Vaccino with a Donkey, a 1620 painting by Cornelius van Poelenburgh, is housed in the Louvre Museum.

The artwork measures 0.545 meters in width and 0.4 meters in height.

The painting depicts a pastoral scene set amidst the ruins of what appears to be the Roman Forum (Campo Vaccino). The ruins are substantial, showing crumbling walls, arches, and columns overgrown with vegetation. A stone fountain is centrally located, with figures drawing water.

In the foreground, there are several people, including three men in conversation, a woman washing clothes at the fountain, and others tending to livestock. A brown cow is prominently featured, along with a donkey carrying a small child. The overall color palette is muted earth tones, with a soft, hazy light suggesting a sunny day. The background shows more ruins and a distant landscape under a pale sky with some clouds.
