Terrace on the Seashore

Terrace on the Seashore

1828 - Painting - 60.8cm x 42.5cm

Veranda covered with a vine or Pergola covered with a vine (Russian: Веранда, обвитая виноградом) is a painting by the Russian painter Sylvester Shchedrin, made in 1828, in Naples, Italy.

Shchedrin produced in Naples and the surroundings of the city a series of paintings devoted to "interior landscapes", that is to say verandas, terraces covered with greenery and whose background consists of a landscape. The motif depicted in this painting is a gazebo, a pergola, an alley covered with climbing plants that rest on arcades of stones and wooden beams. The painter was passionate about reproducing light and air characteristics. He tries to get out of warm tones by adding shades of gray-blue and silver. He chooses the noon time when nature appears in all its splendor in a space of half-shadow, half-light. This painting perfectly reproduces the vision of the world of the Russians at the time whose many painters are attracted to Italy: a world of happiness, harmony and romantic.
