Christ on the cross between the two thiefs

Christ on the cross between the two thiefs

1515 - Painting - 34cm x 50.5cm

The artwork titled Christ on the cross between the two thiefs is a painting created by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1515. This oil on panel painting, currently housed in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, measures 0.505 meters in height and 0.34 meters in width.

The painting depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, flanked by two thieves. Jesus occupies the central position, his head tilted to the right with closed eyes, his body bearing the wounds of crucifixion. The two thieves on either side mirror his pose, their heads turned in different directions, their bodies also showing the agony of crucifixion.

In the foreground, two figures stand on either side of the cross. On the left, a woman kneels, her lips pressed against Jesus' feet, her dark dress and white veil conveying grief and devotion. On the right, a man stands tall, hands clasped in prayer, his red robe and white hat symbolizing faith and reverence.

The backdrop is a dark and stormy sky, the clouds swirling ominously, pierced by a brilliant light emanating from the upper left corner. This light, a symbol of hope and salvation, contrasts with the somber tones of the crucifixion.
