Saint Martin

Saint Martin, a print created in 1480 by Israhel van Meckenem. 



The artwork depicts Saint Martin, a richly dressed figure with long curly hair and a crown, standing and holding a sword. He is wearing a long robe over what appears to be armor. He holds a portion of his robe or cloak, which drapes down to cover a kneeling, naked beggar. The beggar is depicted with a gaunt and aged appearance. The scene is set on a slightly raised, textured ground. The artist's monogram, "I M," is visible in the lower right corner.
