Portrait of Joseph, King of Spain

Portrait of Joseph, King of Spain

1800 - 1810 - Painting - 2.47m x 1.62m

Portrait of Joseph, King of Spain, is a painting created between 1800 and 1810 by François Gérard.  It is housed in the Musée national du Château de Fontainebleau. The painting measures 2.47 meters in width and 1.62 meters in height.

The artwork depicts Joseph Bonaparte, King of Spain, in full regal attire. He stands prominently, his body slightly angled, against a backdrop of rich, dark drapery and a partially visible ornate chair.

He is dressed in a long, white robe or tunic, heavily embellished with gold embroidery and detailing. Over this, he wears a dark blue velvet cloak, lined with ermine or a similar white fur, which is draped dramatically around him. A heavy, ornate gold chain or collar, likely a part of his royal regalia, is visible around his neck. He holds a scepter in his right hand, and what appears to be a sword or other ceremonial object is partially visible at his side. A crown rests on a dark blue velvet cushion near his feet. His expression is serious and somewhat reserved. The overall effect is one of grandeur and royal authority.
