Fighting Horses

1820 - Drawing

My name is Feely T. Heart, and I will be your guide today through one of our paintings: nn Step into the dramatic world of Théodore Géricault's "Fighting Horses," an 1820 drawing housed right here in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Géricault pulls us directly into the heart of a chaotic scene: horses locked in a furious struggle. Two dominate the composition – a white horse, muscles taut with exertion, rears above its fallen, dark-coated opponent. The fallen horse twists beneath, desperately trying to regain its footing. nn Notice how Géricault masterfully uses a combination of loose, expressive strokes and more defined lines. This technique, along with his masterful use of light and shadow, imbues the scene with a sense of frenetic energy and power. He doesn't shy away from the raw, untamed nature of these animals, even within the confines of what appears to be a corral. nn Around the main conflict, other horses react with a mixture of alarm and indifference. A lone figure, likely a groom, attempts to intervene, his back to us as he brandishes a pitchfork. The scene is rendered in a muted palette of browns, grays, and whites, echoing the dusty environment of the corral. "Fighting Horses" is a powerful testament to Géricault's talent for capturing the animal form in motion and serves as a window into the sometimes-brutal realities of working with powerful animals.
