Madame Cézanne (Hortense Fiquet, 1850–1922) in the Conservatory

Madame Cézanne (Hortense Fiquet, 1850–1922) in the Conservatory

1891 - Painting - 73cm x 92cm

Mrs. Cézanne in the Winter Garden – a painting by Paul Cézanne, painted around 1891, one of the most outstanding portraits in the painter's work. It is currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The painting depicts the artist's wife, Hortense, who very often posed for her husband. Cézanne created 24 portraits and many drawings. As in many other portraits of the artist, a well-thought-out spatial construction is combined with a psychological analysis of the model. The diagonal line of the sloping trunk of a tree and the arm of a woman connects the foreground and second plan of the picture.
