The Boat of Love

The Boat of Love

1874 - 1881 - Painting - 94cm x 1.245m

"The Boat of Love" is a painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, created between 1874 and 1881.

The artwork, housed at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, measures 0.94 meters in width and 1.245 meters in height.

The painting depicts a scene of a boat carrying several figures. In the foreground, two central figures, a man and a woman, are embracing. The woman is dressed in a long flowing gown, and the man wears a robe-like garment. Behind them, other figures are visible, some appearing to be playing musical instruments, others observing the central couple. An angel-like figure is also present, standing near the boat's edge. The overall style is characteristic of Rossetti's Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, with a focus on detail and symbolic representation. The color palette is predominantly muted browns and golds. The background suggests a landscape, but the details are somewhat indistinct. The boat itself is a prominent feature, its form curving around the central figures.
