The men are pulling her because they don't want her to be free. They want to control her. The artist, Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, wanted to show how hard it can be to keep your freedom. He used lots of gray colors to make the picture feel a little sad and tense. It's like the picture itself is feeling worried about Liberty! nn
