The Poet

The Poet

1620 - Print - 12.3cm x 16cm

Hi everyone! My name is Isabella, and I'm so excited to show you a really cool picture! It's called The Poet, and it's from a long, long time ago – way back in the 1600s! It's a tiny picture, only a little bigger than your hand! Can you imagine making a picture that small? nn
nn This picture shows a man, maybe a poet. Poets write poems, you know! He's wearing a fancy crown of leaves. Does anyone know what that might mean? (Pause for answers). That's right, it means he's important and maybe very good at writing poems! He's sitting and thinking really hard. What do you think he's thinking about? (Pause for answers). nn
nn Look closely at the man. See how dark and shadowy some parts are, and how bright other parts are? That's called chiaroscuro! It's a fancy word for the way the artist used light and dark to make the man look real. It's like magic, isn't it? And see the tree behind him? It makes him look like he's sitting outside, thinking quietly. nn
nn The artist who made this picture was very clever. He used only black, gray, and white ink! Can you believe it? Just those three colors, and he made this whole picture! It's amazing how much he could do with so little. This picture is like a little window into the past, showing us how people thought and felt a long, long time ago. nn
nn So, what do you think of The Poet? What's your favorite part? (Pause for answers). I hope you enjoyed learning about this amazing little picture! Remember, art can tell us stories and make us think, even if it's a tiny picture from hundreds of years ago! Now, let's go see some more amazing art!
