Dido and Aeneas

Dido and Aeneas

1810 - 1820 - Painting - 45cm x 35cm

Dido i Enees (French: Énée et Didon) is a work by Guérin (1815) exhibited at the Louvre. In the same year he also painted Énée racontant à Didon les malheurs de la ville de Troie (Aeneas explaining to Dido the misfortunes of the city of Troy, in Catalan), which is a more elaborate painting with some differences to the previous one. Énée et Didon, on the other hand, is a sketch of a painting exhibited, specifically, in the (Louvre room, Daru). The scene shown was inspired by Virgil's Aeid. Énée explains to Didon the destruction of Troy. Her son Ascani removes the ring, given by her husband, to the Queen of Carthage, which will lead to a fatal passion for Énée.
