The Young Gaston, known as the Angel of Foix is a painting painted by Claudius Jacquand in 1838, presented that same year at the Paris Salon where it is noticed by critics.
It is the subject of a donation to the Louvre Museum by its owner who nevertheless retains the usufruct.
In 2014, the painting was loaned to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon as part of the exhibition L'invention du Passé. Stories of Heart and Sword 1802-1850.
This painting illustrates the drama of Orthez of 1380 told by Jean Froissart in his Chronicles. Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix and Lord of Béarn, had his son Gaston imprisoned after he tried to poison him. Fébus ended up murdering this only legitimate son.
