Walter Stewart (1756-1796)

Walter Stewart (1756-1796) is a painting created in 1781 by Charles Willson Peale. 



The artwork is an oil on canvas portrait depicting Walter Stewart, a military officer, standing in a three-quarter view. He is dressed in a dark blue military coat with red facings, a white waistcoat, and white breeches. His boots are black. He holds his hands clasped in front of him. 



The background shows a landscape with a military encampment of numerous white tents under a cloudy sky. A tree partially obscures the left side of the portrait. The overall palette is muted, with dark greens, browns, and grays dominating the background, contrasting with the brighter colors of Stewart's uniform.



The painting measures 1.019 meters in width and 1.273 meters in height and is part of the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery.
