Sketch for the courtroom of the Court of Assises of the Palais de Justice in Paris: Justice

1866 - 1873 - Painting - 8.5cm x 16cm

Sketch for the courtroom of the Court of Assises of the Palais de Justice in Paris: Justice is a painting created between 1866 and 1873 by Léon Bonnat.

The artwork depicts four separate scenes within an ornate, gold-leafed frame. Each smaller frame contains a depiction of a putto (a cherubic figure).

The putti are depicted in various poses: one holds a sword, another a scale, and two are flanking a tablet inscribed with the word "LEX" (Law). The background of each smaller scene is dark, contrasting with the light-colored putti. The overall style suggests a classical or neoclassical influence. The painting measures 0.085 meters in width and 0.16 meters in height and is part of the Petit Palais collection.
