The Baptism of Christ

The Baptism of Christ

1506 - 1507 - Painting - 46cm x 27.3cm

The Baptism of Christ is a painting by Pietro Perugino, created between 1506 and 1507. It is housed in the Basilica of the Annunciation of Mary. The painting measures 0.464 meters in width and 0.273 meters in height.

The artwork depicts the baptism of Christ. John the Baptist, standing in the Jordan River, pours water over Christ's head. Christ stands humbly, his hands clasped. Two angels with wings are present on either side of Christ, one appearing to be kneeling in prayer. Two additional angels with wings flank the scene, one on each side of the composition. The background features a serene landscape with trees, hills, and a calm river. The overall style is characteristic of the early Renaissance, with a focus on balanced composition, realistic figures, and a tranquil atmosphere.
