Self Portrait

Hi everyone, my name is Isabella! Today, we're going to look at a very special painting. It's called a "self-portrait." Can anyone guess what a self-portrait is? nn That's right! It's a painting that an artist makes of themselves. This self-portrait is by an artist named Edgar Degas. He made this when he was a young man, just like some of you! nn See how he painted himself in the middle? He wants us to look right at him. What do you think he's thinking about? nn Degas used only black and white paint for this picture. That makes it look serious and important, don't you think? Look closely at his face. Can you see the lines he drew to show the shadows? That makes his face look real, like we could reach out and touch him! nn Degas was really good at drawing. He used special tools to make thin lines on a metal plate. Then he used ink to print this picture.
