Study for "Slave Market"

Study for "Slave Market"

Date unknown - Drawing

"Study for 'Slave Market'," a poignant drawing in pencil on paper, is housed here at the Walters Art Museum. This preparatory sketch, created by the renowned French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, offers a glimpse into the artist's process for his larger painting of the same name. Measuring 37.2 by 27.8 centimeters, the drawing depicts two men in a moment of charged interaction. The standing figure, clad in a toga, stands tall, his hand thoughtfully resting on his chin as he gazes down at the seated man. This seated figure, wearing only a loincloth, sits with his hands bound, his eyes looking upward with a mixture of fear and pleading. Gérôme's masterful hand is evident in the way he captures the subtle expressions of these two figures, hinting at the complex emotions surrounding the slave trade.
