The Holy Trinity

The Holy Trinity

1640 - 1650 - Painting - 1.65m x 2.305m

The artwork The Holy Trinity is a painting created by an unknown artist between 1640 and 1650. It is currently held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest and measures 1.65 meters in width and 2.305 meters in height.

The painting depicts God the Father and God the Son, both appearing as bearded men, holding a large cross between them. God the Father, on the right, is depicted as an older man with a long white beard, wearing a blue robe and a golden cloak. God the Son, on the left, is depicted as a younger man with a shorter brown beard, partially draped in a white cloth. He is bare-chested, revealing wounds on his hands, likely referencing the crucifixion. A white dove, representing the Holy Spirit, hovers above them, completing the Trinity.

Below the central figures, four putti, small angelic figures, are depicted playing on clouds. One holds a helmet, another a sword, possibly symbolizing the armor of God. The background features a dramatic sky that transitions to a serene landscape with a river and buildings in the distance.
