Portrait of a woman and Portrait of a man

Portrait of a woman and Portrait of a man

1635 - Painting

Portrait of a woman and Portrait of a man, a painting by David Teniers the Younger, dated 1635.

The artwork consists of two separate portraits, presented side-by-side. The left panel depicts an elderly woman, seated and dressed in dark clothing with a white collar and cuffs. Her hands are clasped in her lap. The right panel shows an elderly man, also seated, in similar dark attire with a large white collar. He holds a piece of paper or a small book in his hands. Both portraits are rendered in a dark, somewhat somber palette characteristic of 17th-century Dutch painting. The background in both is muted and indistinct, focusing attention on the sitters. The painting is in the collection of the Fondation Custodia. The exact dimensions are not provided in the metadata.
