Madonna and Child

Madonna and Child, a painting by Quentin Matsys, dated 1520. 



The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. Mary is seated and wears a white head covering and a beige robe with a red overgarment. Jesus, a light-skinned child with reddish hair, sits in her lap, appearing somewhat chubby and nude except for a white cloth around his lower body. He is looking towards the viewer. Mary's gaze is directed slightly downward towards the child. 



The background is a landscape with rolling hills, a small village, and a rocky outcrop with a castle-like structure in the distance. In the lower left corner, there is a small still life of grapes and a yellowish fruit. The painting is characterized by a realistic style, with attention to detail in the figures' features and the landscape. The painting's dimensions are 0.397 meters wide and 0.552 meters high. It is housed in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
