Ferry

Ferry

1870 - Painting - 94cm x 66.2cm

Ferry, a painting by Jacob Maris, 1870.

The artwork depicts a tranquil river scene. A flat-bottomed ferry, carrying several people and what appears to be a cow or ox, is the central focus. The passengers are dressed in dark clothing, and their features are not highly detailed.

The river is relatively calm, reflecting the pale sky and the surrounding landscape. On the left, a sailboat with a brown sail is visible in the distance. The far bank of the river is lined with trees and vegetation, while the near bank shows some sparse vegetation and what looks like an old wooden cart or wheelbarrow.

The style is Impressionistic, with visible brushstrokes and a focus on capturing the overall atmosphere and light rather than precise detail. The colors are muted earth tones, with browns, greens, and grays dominating the palette. The sky is a light, cloudy gray. A bare, leafless tree stands prominently on the right bank. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The artwork is 0.94 meters wide and 0.662 meters high and is part of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag collection.
