An Arch of the Old Westminster Bridge is a painting by the British painter Samuel Scott painted in 1750. Scott paints in this river landscape an arch of the bridge over the Thames, then newly opened[1] and shortly before being opened to the public. This bridge links Westminster and Lambeth. [2]
This painting is part of a series on the same subject of which five copies are preserved. In the work you can perceive the influence of Scott's master, Canaletto, whose vedutte was very fashionable in British high society at the time. In fact, Canaletto himself painted london bridges in his English period. [3]
On the canvas you can see an arch of the bridge in the foreground, with a rudimentary wooden scaffolding where two workers pass a jar, in an anecdotal element. [4] In the water there are several boats (gondola type, another reflection of the Venetian master) used for the transport of goods, some bathers swimming and in the background, the city of London, west of the bridge (West End).
