The capitulation of Ayacucho

1924 - Painting

The Capitulation of Ayacucho is an oil on canvas painting made by the Peruvian painter Daniel Hernández Morillo in 1924. It is located in the gallery of the Museum of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru. [1][2][3]

The painting depicts the moment when José de Canterac, chief of staff of the Royal Army of Peru and on behalf of Viceroy José de la Serna, signs the Capitulation of Ayacucho before General Antonio José de Sucre after the Battle of Ayacucho, on December 9, 1824. Hernández painted the oil painting on the occasion of the centenary of the battle in 1924. In 1974, the painter Germán Suárez Vértiz made a large-scale reproduction that is installed in the Quinoa site museum. [4][5][6]

In 2016 the artist Jesús Ruiz Durand reproduced the painting, expanding the space of the room to include indigenous characters, titled It Los ayacuchos invisibles as a form of vindication. [7]
