Portrait of Johann Frederick of Saxony (Italian: Portrait of Johann Frederick of Saxony) is a portrait of Johann Frederick of Saxony. Ritratto di Giovanni Federico I, elettore di Sassonia) is a painting by the Italian painter Titian (1490–1576), a representative of the Venetian school. It was created around 1550-1551. It is kept in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. No. GG100).
The painting was acquired by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1614–1662) for his collection.
The canvas depicts the Elector of Saxony, Johann Frederick the Magnanimous (1503–1554), an opponent of the emperor in the Schmalkalden War, taken prisoner by Charles V at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. Titian painted his portrait during his imprisonment in Augsburg.
A wonderful technique of Titian - the depicted person does not fit into the frames of the picture. Thus, the artist demonstrates in all the inaccessibility, pride, immersed in dark reflections of a person from whom freedom was taken away.
