The Death of the Virgin

The Death of the Virgin

1513 - Print

My name is Isabella, and I will be your guide today through one of our most impressive paintings! nn We are going to look at a very special picture made a long, long time ago by a talented artist named Albrecht Dürer. It's called "The Death of the Virgin." Can you say "The Death of the Virgin"? nn This picture tells a story about Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is lying very still on a bed, and it looks like she is sleeping. Do you see her? nn The room is kind of dark, but there's a candle that makes a warm light. See if you can find the candle! It's like a little beacon in the darkness. nn Look at all the people around Mary. They are sad because she is gone. Can you try to imagine how they are feeling? nn Dürer was really good at drawing. He used lines to make the clothes look wrinkly and the faces look sad. It's almost like you can reach out and touch the people in the picture! nn
