The Huis ten Bosch at The Hague and Its Formal Garden (View from the South)

1668 - Painting - 55.2cm x 39.1cm

Jan van der Heyden's "The Huis ten Bosch at The Hague and Its Formal Garden (View from the South)" is a 1668 painting.

The artwork depicts a view of the Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague, seen from the south, across its formal gardens. The palace is a large, brick building with a central domed section and multiple windows. The gardens are meticulously designed with hedges forming geometric patterns, including what appears to be a maze.

Several figures, small in scale compared to the palace, are visible within the garden; some appear to be strolling, while others are seated. A tall, slender structure, possibly a trellis or arbor, stands prominently in the garden. The sky is partly cloudy, with a mix of light and darker clouds. The overall palette is muted, with earth tones dominating the scene. The painting measures 0.552 meters in width and 0.391 meters in height and is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.
