Breton Girl Holding a Jar

Breton Girl Holding a Jar

1884 - Painting - 69cm x 90cm

The Brittany girl with a pot in hand is an oil painting painted in 1884 by artist Amélie Lundahl (1850–1914). The size of the work is 90×69 cm. The Brittany girl-in-hand painting is part of the collections of the Ateneum Art Museum, where it was purchased in 1996.

In the painting, a Brittany girl sits with a large pot on her lap. It highlights the artist's sophisticated use of colours: rosé, silvery grey and brownish nuances. The contrast is created by the girl's black dress and white collar. A soft light falls on the girl's brown pensive face. Lundahl is said to have had a strong choral sense.

Lundahl worked in France from 1877 to 1885, and especially the time spent in Brittany in the summer was artistically significant to him. He painted a lot of the Coast of Brittany and its people. Several of his paintings repeat the same subject, a young woman. The painting is based on realism, naturalism and open-air painting. Jules Breton and Jules Bastien-Lepage were important influencers of the open-air painting at the time.
