View in the neighbourhood of a Dutch village

1680 - 1690 - Painting

View in the neighbourhood of a Dutch village, a painting by Meindert Hobbema, dates from 1680-1690 and is in a private collection.

The painting depicts a rural Dutch landscape. Dominating the scene are large, mature trees, their leaves a mix of greens and browns, suggesting autumn. These trees form a grove or copse, partially obscuring some thatched-roof houses in the middle ground.

A dirt road or path winds through the scene, leading towards the houses and then disappearing into the trees. Several small figures are visible, some appear to be working in a field, others are walking along the path. The sky is partly cloudy, with a large, fluffy white cloud prominent in the upper left. The overall palette is muted earth tones, with greens, browns, and grays predominating. The style is characteristic of Dutch landscape painting of the period, with attention to detail in the depiction of trees and foliage.
