The Refugee is a painting by the German-Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum. Felix Nussbaum was a German-Jewish artist born in the German city of Osnabrück. In 1935, after the Nazis came to power, Nussbaum moved with his partner to Paris, where they applied for an immigration visa to Belgium. After some difficulties they received their immigration visa and in 1936 moved to Belgium. The stay in Belgium was not easy because the Belgian authorities tried to prevent the emigration of Jews to it. In 1939 he painted one of his familiar paintings: "The Refugee".
