Hi everyone! My name is Isabella, and I'm so excited to show you a really cool drawing today! It's called "Ford at Glyn-Lledr in Wales," and it's super old – it was made in 1863! That's a long, long time ago! Can anyone guess how old that is? nn
(Pause for children's responses) nn
That's right, it's very old! The artist who made it was a man named Hans Gude. He was really good at drawing pictures of nature. This drawing is mostly gray, but look closely – can you see how some parts are darker gray and some are lighter? nn
(Pause for children's responses and encourage them to point out different shades of gray) nn
That's how Hans Gude showed us things like the water moving in the river and the bumpy ground. See the little horse and rider crossing the river? That's called a ford – it's like a shallow place in the river where you can walk or ride across. What do you think the rider is wearing? nn
(Pause for children's responses) nn
Yes, it looks like a long coat! And look over there – do you see a little house or maybe a farm hidden among the trees? Hans Gude was really good at making us feel like we're right there in Wales, looking at this beautiful scene. He used dark and light grays to make the trees look far away and the rocks look close. nn
(Pause for children's responses and encourage them to point out details in the drawing) nn
The whole drawing feels very peaceful and quiet, doesn't it? It's like a snapshot of a calm day in Wales. Hans Gude was really good at showing us how things look and feel. He made this drawing a long time ago, but we can still see it and enjoy it today! Isn't that amazing? What's your favorite part of the drawing? nn
(Pause for children's responses) nn
I'm so glad you all came to see this wonderful drawing with me! Remember, looking closely at art can help us see things we might miss otherwise. Now, let's go see some more amazing art!
