Portrait of Helena Catharina de Witte (1661-95), wife of Iman mogge, lord of Haamstede

1678 - Painting - 40cm x 49cm

Portrait of Helena Catharina de Witte (1661-95), wife of Iman mogge, lord of Haamstede, is a 1678 painting by Caspar Netscher.

The painting depicts Helena Catharina de Witte, seated three-quarter length, in an elegant pose. She wears a brown gown with gold detailing, a white underdress with puffed sleeves, and a flowing blue robe draped over her shoulders. A pearl necklace adorns her neck, and she has blonde, curly hair styled in a fashionable manner. Her expression is serene and composed.

The background is dark and somewhat indistinct, featuring a glimpse of a landscape with trees and a hint of sky. To the right, there's a suggestion of architectural elements, possibly a stone pillar or wall with decorative carving. Her right hand rests on what appears to be a stone lion's head, from which water seems to be flowing. The overall style is characteristic of 17th-century Dutch portraiture, with attention to detail in the rendering of fabrics and textures. The painting measures 0.4 meters in width and 0.49 meters in height and is part of the Rijksmuseum collection.
