The Incredulity of St. Thomas is an oil painting on canvas by Andrea Vaccaro. The year of construction is around 1630 and is kept in a private collection. The painting represents the unbelief of Thomas who does not believe in the resurrection of Christ and is convinced only after having touched the Five Holy Wounds. The saint is depicted touching the wound in the side inflicted by a Roman spear while Jesus shows the wound of the right hand caused by one of the sacred nails of the cross.
In the context of Neapolitan painting of the seventeenth century, the painting is part of the pictorial vein of the Caravaggisti. In particular, the work is part of the artistic season in which the Neapolitan master was very inspired by the painter Antoon Van Dyck.
