Hi everyone! My name is Isabella, and I'm so excited to show you a really cool painting! It's called "Portrait of a Young Man," and it's super old – it was painted way back in 1637! That's a long, long time ago! Can anyone guess how old that is? (Pause for answers) Wow, you're all so smart! It's older than your grandparents, and even older than their grandparents! nn This painting is by an artist named Govert Flinck. He was really good at painting people. Look at this young man. He's dressed very nicely, isn't he? What do you think he's wearing? (Pause for answers). Yes, he has a fancy dark coat, maybe velvet! And look at his hat – it's a beret, and it even has a little fluffy thing on it! What do you think that fluffy thing is made of? (Pause for answers). Maybe fur, or maybe a feather! nn See how dark the background is? It makes the young man really stand out, right? It's like he's the star of the show! The artist used lots of dark colors – browns, blacks, and grays. But look closely – can you see a little bit of reddish-brown under his coat? It's a tiny bit of color, but it makes the painting feel a little warmer, doesn't it? nn The artist was really clever with the light, too. It looks like the light is coming from the top left, shining on the young man's face. This makes him look very real, like he could step right out of the painting!
