Britomart Redeems Faire Amoret

Britomart Redeems Faire Amoret

1833 - Painting - 90.8cm x 66cm

Britomart Redeems Faire Amoret, a painting by William Etty, 1833.

The artwork depicts a dramatic scene, possibly from a narrative poem or legend. A female warrior, Britomart, clad in armor and a plumed helmet, is centrally positioned. She holds a dagger and appears to be rescuing or freeing a bound, nude man. To Britomart's left, a chained, nude woman, Amoret, is partially draped in a reddish-brown fabric. The setting appears to be a richly decorated architectural niche or alcove, with ornate details visible in the background. The overall style is dark and richly colored, with a focus on the figures' expressions and gestures. The painting's dimensions are 0.908 meters wide and 0.66 meters high. It is housed in the Tate.
