Suprematism

Suprematism

1916 - Painting - 39cm x 70cm

Hi everyone! My name is Isabella, and I'm so excited to show you a really cool painting! It's called "Suprematism," and it's from a long, long time ago – 1916! It's by an artist named Olga Rozanova. Isn't that a pretty name? nn (Pause for children to respond) nn This painting is super small! It's only about this big (gesture to indicate size). But even though it's small, it's packed with amazing things to see. Look closely! What colors do you see? nn (Pause for children to respond and discuss colors: greys, whites, blacks, oranges, and yellows) nn That's right! Lots of greys, whites, blacks, oranges, and yellows. Now, this painting isn't like a picture of a cat or a tree. It doesn't show real things. It's made of shapes! Can you see the squares? And the rectangles? And that cool curved shape? What shape is that curved shape? nn (Pause for children to respond and identify shapes) nn Yes! It's a crescent! The artist used these shapes to make something beautiful, just by using colors and shapes. It's like a puzzle made of color! Do you think the orange and yellow parts are brighter than the rest? Why do you think that is? nn (Pause for children to respond and discuss the focal point) nn Exactly! They stand out! They're like the sun shining in a cloudy sky. This kind of art is called Suprematism. It means the artist is showing us the power of shapes and colors all by themselves, without showing real things. It's all about how the shapes and colors make us feel. Does it make you feel calm? Or excited? Or maybe something else? nn (Pause for children to respond and discuss their feelings) nn It's amazing how something so simple can be so interesting, isn't it? It's like a secret code of colors and shapes! Olga Rozanova was very clever to make this painting. She wanted us to think about the shapes and colors, and how they work together. So take your time, look closely, and see what you discover! What's your favorite part of the painting? nn (Pause for children to respond and share their observations) nn I hope you enjoyed learning about "Suprematism"! Remember, art can be many things – it can be fun, it can be exciting, it can even make you think! Now let's go see what other amazing art we can discover!
