Gorge at Cività Castellana

Gorge at Cività Castellana

1787 - Painting - 37.5cm x 50cm

The artwork Gorge at Civitá Castellana is a painting, created in 1787. It is currently held at the Nationalmuseum, and measures 0.375 meters in width and 0.5 meters in height. The author name is not known.

The painting depicts a verdant gorge with a towering, sheer cliff face on the left side. The cliff is rendered in shades of gray, brown, and ochre, highlighting its rugged texture. Lush green vegetation clings to its sides and spills down into the ravine. On the right, the land slopes less dramatically, covered in a dense thicket of trees and shrubs.

Perched atop the cliff, almost camouflaged by the surrounding foliage, is a large, rectangular building with a simple, austere facade. This could be a villa or a monastery, hinting at human presence within this wild landscape. Further in the distance, almost disappearing into the hazy atmosphere, are two smaller buildings, suggesting a continuation of the settlement beyond the immediate view.

The sky above is a serene expanse of pale blue, lightly populated with fluffy white clouds. The overall atmosphere is one of tranquility and quiet grandeur, capturing the beauty of the Italian landscape.
